Gateway Help Glossary

This glossary provides a list of the terms used on the Gateway Web site, and their definitions.

  • Boolean search: Search technique that uses 'boolean' operators - AND, OR, NOT - to specify how keywords are combined when executing the search.
  • Breadcrumb search trail: Provides the search results with context relative to the search criteria used.
  • Canadian Military History Gateway: A public, freely-accessible Web site providing a single point of access to a quality-controlled set of digital resources related to Canada's military history.
  • Default values: Values that are assumed or supplied automatically if a value is not specified.
  • Flash format: Digital format for displaying interactive, animated files within a Web page.
  • Gateway: A database of Internet resource links and resource descriptions that provides access to digital resources residing on distributed Web sites.
  • Gateway partner: An organization that is the publisher or owner of a resource accessed through the Gateway.
  • Guided navigation: Capability to browse a directory of resources by topic, starting with a broad topic and navigating a topic tree to increasingly more specific areas of interest.
  • History Browser: Gateway feature that supports information retrieval by navigating through a topic tree, or hierarchical lists of topics and subtopics.
  • HTML: Hypertext Mark-up Language. The standard language used for creating Web documents.
  • Hyperlink: Marked text that can be clicked on to navigate within and between Web pages.
  • Information provider: The publisher or owner of a resource.
  • Learning resource: A resource with a learning objective.
  • Metadata: Data which provides information about a resource.
  • Multimedia: Digital resources that use any use any combination of text, numeric data, still and moving images, animation, sound, and graphics.
  • My Gateway: A helpful research tool that allows search results of interest to be selectively saved to personal folders for later reuse.
  • Navigation Bar: A set of links on a Web site that provide consistent and predictable access to Web pages.
  • Quality-controlled subject gateway: An Internet gateway service which applies a rich set of quality measures to support systematic resource discovery.
  • Record: A resource description stored in a database.
  • Resource: A item, document, collection, site or service that is of interest to an end-user.
  • Resource catalogue: A database of Internet resource descriptions that is made accessible through an online service such as a gateway.
  • Resource description: Metadata attached to an information resource and structured according to a pre-defined set of semantic elements such as title, author, date and subject.
  • Resource discovery: The finding and retrieving of resources that are relevant to the user of the system
  • Resource provider: An Internet service that makes digital resources available.
  • Subject gateway: A subject-based resource discovery guide that provide links to information resources (documents, collections, sites or services), predominantly accessible via the Internet. Resource description and subject classification are the most important characteristics of a gateway.
  • Text search: Information retrieval by entering one or more words into a search engine
  • Thesaurus: A device for vocabulary control, usually for a specific subject area, indicating preferred terms, non-preferred terms, and semantic relations between terms.
  • Timeline: A Gateway feature providing access to resources by century, decade and year.
  • Topic: A grouping of knowledge within a specific category or subject area.
  • Topic tree: Topics, subtopics and their subtopics, etc., arranged in hierarchical groupings.
